After breakfast, we will organize a half-day sightseeing tour during which you will be taken on a memorable UNESCO Heritage Tour. The tour begins with a visit to Nepal’s holiest Pashupatinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Explore the temple grounds and hidden shrines behind the main temple. There are also cremation ghats along the Bagmati River. The temple offers a rich insight into the Hindu philosophy of life, death, and rebirth.
After Phasupatinath, we will take a tour of the iconic Boudhanath Stupa. It is a massive hemispherical stupa with hundreds of prayer wheels and small monasteries surrounding it. You can witness hundreds of Tibetan Buddhist monks chanting and performing circumambulation, or the kora. You, too, can walk clockwise while spinning the prayer wheels. There are also many restaurants and eateries within the premises. You can sip coffee or have lunch while enjoying the serene environment.
An alternative tour for Boudhanath Stupa is the 2500-year-old Swoyambhunath Stupa. Climb up to the hilltop where the stupa sits and enjoy panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley. The ancient stupa is decorated with prayer flags and shrines. Monkeys roam around the premises freely. Hence, it is also known as the “Monkey Temple.” After the half-day tour, we will return to the hotel and do the final check and shop for any missing items. Then, you can do the final packing and get ready for the trip.

We will drive towards Tribhuvan Airport’s domestic terminal for the Kathmandu to Pokhara flight after breakfast. Pokhara is the centre of the Western Development Region and the Gateway to the Annapurna Region. In the 25 minutes of scenic flight, we will enjoy the panoramas of Annapurna Mountain, Ganesh Mountain, Nilgiri Mountain, Manaslu Mountain, and other mountains. Once we reach Pokhara Airport, we will take a 2.5-hour drive to Trikhedhunga, following the Pokhara-Baglung Highway. The drive provides you with the first glimpse of the beautiful countryside of Pokhara. We will pass by beautiful villages, terrace farms, and the river valleys. It heightens the excitement.
The road passes through Lumle village via Nayapul to get to Tirkhedhunga. We will begin our trek from here onwards. The ABC Trekking trail starts with a gentle walk through small Gurung settlements. We will cross the Bhurungdi River on a suspension bridge. The trail soon turns into the challenging stone staircases. There are over 3,000 steep stone staircases that go through villages and hillside terrace farms. We will follow the ascending path for a couple of hours to reach the Magar village of Ulleri. It is a small stone-paved village on the hillside from where we can enjoy the scenic views of Annapurna Mountain. We will stay overnight at Ulleri.

We will start our second day trek from Ulleri. The Annapurna Base Camp Trekking trail enters the lush forest of rhododendrons and oak from here. Moving further uphill, we can feel a slight change in the climate as it gets cooler. The winding trail takes us deeper into the lush forests. Occasionally, we can see cascading waterfalls and small streams. Along the way, we will also pass by villages like Banthanti and Nangethanti, where we can see the locals busy tending their crops and cattle.
The trail starts to ascend through stone staircases from Nangethanti. Fortunately, it is not as demanding and steep as the Ulleri staircase. After a while, the forest gradually becomes thinner and opens up. We can see the snow peaks of Annapurna I, Annapurna II, Dhaulagiri, Machhapucchre, and more on the horizon. Finally, we will reach Ghorepani, located on the ridge surrounded by forest. It is a beautiful Magar village and offers scenic views of the Annapurna ranges. Stay overnight in a teahouse in Ghorepani.

We will prepare for the trek quite early in the morning to witness one of the most beautiful sunrise views from Poon Hill. A 40-minute walk uphill through lush rhododendron forest from Ghorepani will take us to this iconic viewpoint. Poon Hill is named after the Pun ethnic, the inhabitants of the area. We will enjoy the views of the far western Himalaya of over 600km of range, including Mount Dhaulagiri, Tukuche Peak, Dhampus, Nilgiri Peak, Annapurna, Machhapuchre, Hiunchuli Peak, Himal, and other peaks. We will return to Ghorepani for breakfast.
Descending from Ghorepani, the ABC Trek route goes uphill through forest ridges. We will come across the Deurali Pass, which is a great viewpoint to witness the snow-capped peaks. From here, the trail again descends through dense rhododendron and oak forests towards Banthanti. The charming village of Banthanti is an excellent spot for resting. After the brief rest, we will continue our journey to Tadapani. The trail has short uphill and downhill climbing sections. Tadapani is a small village that sits on a ridge and offers a close-up look at Annapurna South, Machhapuchhare, and Hiunchuli. We will stay here overnight.

Leaving Tadapani early in the morning, we will follow the steep descending trail through the rhododendron, oak, and bamboo forests. The path then becomes narrow and takes us to Chuile. It is a small settlement that offers a clear view of Annapurna South. The trekking route continues to descend into a valley, passing by small rivers and crossing several suspension bridges. There are a few gradual ups and downs along the way.
The ABC trail takes us through the small village of Gurjung. It is a pretty Gurung village with traditional houses and terraced farmlands. We can stop here for lunch and energize ourselves. The trail from here passes through scattered settlements and terrace fields. As we get closer to Chhomrong, the path begins to level out. It is the largest Gurung village in the region and the last permanent settlement before the Annapurna Base Camp. Chhomrong is the gateway to Annapurna Sanctuary. Tonight we will stay at a teahouse here.

Enjoy a hearty breakfast in Chhomrong, and then we will resume our ABC journey. There is also a local checkpoint here, where we must show our ACAP permits. We will begin our long descent on stone staircases towards the Chhomrong Khola. We will cross the river on a suspension bridge and start our steep uphill trek. Lowering down to the Chhomrong River, we will walk through the colourful rhododendron forest and choose the rising path that contours up towards Sinuwa. The steep climb will take us to Lower Sinuwa and then to Upper Sinuwa. The towering peaks of Annapurna and other snow-capped peaks will greet us from here. We can take a short break here before resuming the journey.
The ABC Trekking route enters the forests of bamboo and rhododendron, where it becomes increasingly humid. We will gradually descend to the Bamboo village before ascending again. The trail is a mix of stone-paved and forest paths. From here, we will trek through thick bamboo forests and mossy trees. Along the way, there are many small waterfalls and streams, which we will cross on small wooden bridges. It takes around 1.5 hours of hiking from Bamboo to reach Dobhan. We will rest overnight at a small teahouse in this serene village.

After breakfast, we will leave Dovan and begin a steady uphill climb to the Himalaya Hotel. En route, we will cross several suspension wooden bridges over small streams. Himalaya Hotel is not your traditional hotel, but a cluster of basic lodges. It is located in a narrow valley surrounded by steep, towering cliffs. The path beyond the Himalaya Hotel takes us to the forest. We will continue with our gradual ascent along the Modi Khola Valley. Enjoy the spectacular view of the glacial river before you reach Hinku Cave. The Hinku Cave is one of the famous landmarks along the Annapurna Base Camp route. It offers a striking view of the surrounding cliffs.
From Hinku Cave, the forest begins to get thinner, and it transitions into alpine meadows. It takes an hour-long uphill trek to reach Deurali. We will continue climbing and pass through the rocky area to get to the open basin of Machhapuchhare Base Camp (MBC). The base camp sits right below the south face of Mount Machhapuchhare. It offers magnificent and close-up views of the fish-shaped Machhapuchhare, and other surrounding peaks like Annapurna South, Gangapurna, Hiunchuli, and more. The area is surrounded by glacial moraines and snowy ridges. Overnight stay at Machhapuchhare Base Camp.

ABC Trek offers a thrilling adventure with unparalleled mountain views, deep into the heart of the Annapurna region. Thousands of trekkers undertake the journey to experience the grandeur of the Annapurna Base Camp in person. It is an easily accessible journey that begins with a drive from the tourist hub, Pokhara. The scenic trail from Trikhedhunga takes you right through the Annapurna Conservation Area. From the very first day of your trek, the mesmerizing views of Annapurna, Machhapuchhare, Dhaulagiri, and more will follow. As each day brings you closer to the base camp, the view becomes more stunning.
The Annapurna Base Camp Trekking trail takes you through the dense subtropical forests, filled with different species of mosses, ferns, and orchids. It is a paradise for nature and wildlife enthusiasts. You will also trek on the high ridges, deep gorges, and enter the glacial valleys of the Himalayas. Every step feels deeply personal, and it takes you closer to the mountains. Before you even reach the ABC, you will get to enjoy the captivating view of the sunrise over the snowy vistas from the iconic Poon Hill Viewpoint.
The small Gurung and Magar villages along the route offer cozy rest spots and warm meals to keep you energized throughout the trek. Finally, reaching the Annapurna Base Camp, you will find yourself surrounded by towering white peaks on all sides. The moment feels surreal and emotional, and leaves a lasting impression. But it doesn’t end there. Witnessing the sunset and sunrise as the glacial basin glows in the golden light will leave you mesmerized. The trekking trip is not only about reaching 4,130 meters. It is about exploring the beauty of the Himalayas. Hence, many trekkers find the Annapurna Base Camp Trek in Nepal so captivating.
The Gurung and Magar are two of Nepal’s biggest indigenous groups who reside along the trail of the Annapurna Base Camp. Both ethnic groups have their own unique culture and traditions. Similarly, both communities have a long history of serving in the British Gurkha regiments. You can see some military pride in their traditions. During the trek, you will pass by numerous villages and stay at teahouses run by these locals. So, you will have the opportunity to take a closer look at their culture. It is also an opportunity to gain valuable insights about them. Let us get to know them better.
The Gurung people follow Buddhism, Hinduism, and traditional indigenous shamanism. They have their own language, Tamu Kyi, which has Tibeto-Burman influence. Their traditional occupation mostly involved agriculture, animal husbandry, and trade. The traditional dress for women consists of gunyu cholo, ghalek, patuka, and Hembari. They wear heavy gold and silver jewelry. Meanwhile, the men traditionally wear bhangra, kachhad, ghalek, and Dhaka topi.
During special occasions, the community performs traditional dances like “Ghatu” and “Khema,” accompanied by traditional music. Their biggest festive celebration is “Tamu Loshar,” also known as the Gurung New Year. The Gurung houses are traditionally made with stone and slate roofs. The biggest Gurung village along the ABC Trail is Chhomrong.
The Magar ethnic community practices Buddhism, Hinduism, and animism. Like Gurungs, their language also has a Tibeto-Burman influence. However, it is different than the Gurung language. The Magar language has several dialects, which vary from Magar communities living in eastern and western regions of Nepal. Traditionally, they were mostly involved in agriculture, animal husbandry, and traditional crafts like intricate weaving and metal work. The traditional attire of Magar women consists of cholo, patuka, pallo, and a shawl or scarf. Like Gurung women, they also wear ornaments made of gold and silver. On the other hand, the men wear bhangra, kachhad, waist belt or sash, outer jackets, and Dhaka topi.
The famous traditional dance of the Magar is known as the “Rodhi dance.” It is performed during festivals and community gatherings. Likewise, they also have folk songs and traditional music passed down from generations. Maghe Sankranti, Dashain, and Baisakh Purnima are their most important festivals. The traditional houses of Magar are built with stone, wood, and mud, while the roofs are made with slate or wooden shingles. Ghorepani is one of the most notable Magar villages along the ABC Trekking trail.
Although Annapurna Base Camp is a moderate-grade trek, it does require proper preparation. It is a challenging journey in remote areas of the Annapurna region that takes you to an elevation of 4,130 meters. So, here are some critical preparation tips for the trek that no one tells you:
The average trekking hours during the 14 Days Annapurna Base Camp trek is 4 to 5 hours. It is not overly demanding, but it has steep ascents and descents on stone staircases, forest pathways, and rocky terrain, which is not an easy task. Most notably, the steep stairs of Ulleri will test you physically. It requires good fitness, so start training 6 to 12 weeks before the journey. Do cardio, strength training (legs and core), and weighted hikes. Practice ascending and descending stairs or hills. You can also do balance workouts to prepare for the uneven and rough terrain.
The best time to trek to ABC is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These seasons have the best weather conditions with clear skies and excellent views. Hence, they are also peak trekking seasons. Meanwhile, summer (June to August) and winter (December to February) are the off-seasons with hidden risks. The weather during these times is unpredictable. Summer coincides with monsoon, so the heavy rain makes the trail wet, muddy, and slippery. There is snowfall in higher altitude regions during winter, so teahouses may close for the season. Hence, trekkers must understand the weather conditions and carry proper gear accordingly.
Even when you trek during the best times, the temperature in the lower and higher altitude areas varies significantly. There are chances of sudden winds, rain, and snow above an altitude of 3,000 meters, i.e., the area from Machhapuchhre Base Camp to Annapurna Base Camp. Layering clothes helps to keep you warm when the temperature drops. Carry base layers (moisture-wicking tops and bottoms), middle layers (insulating fleece or sweaters), and outer layers (windproof/waterproof jackets and pants). Also, carry hats, gloves, a buff, scarves, and a gaiter to keep yourself warm.
Single-use plastic, including plastic bottled water, has been banned in the Annapurna region since 2023. There are no proper dustbins on the trail, leading to a waste problem caused by plastic bottles. The ban was implemented to preserve the environment. So, bring your own water bottle during the Annapurna Base Camp Trek and fill it at the teahouses. The teahouses provide boiled and filtered water for a small fee. You can use water purification tablets if you refill the water from streams or taps. These tablets are lighter and sustainable than plastic bottles.
The mobile signal can get poor when you ascend to an altitude above 3,000-3,500 meters. Therefore, the calls and data can get disconnected suddenly. The accommodations along the route provide internet service, but it can also be limited at higher altitude areas. When you trek through deep valleys or areas surrounded by high cliffs, the network may disappear. It may affect the use of networked tools and maps. Consider bringing a satellite phone or GPS messengers for reliable communication at remote spots.
Teahouses are cozy, but the facilities are basic. The rooms in these stays are thin, and noises from other rooms can easily enter your room. So, carry earplugs and an eye mask for sound sleep. Also, the rooms have poor insulation. The accommodations provide blankets, but they may not be enough to keep you warm at higher elevations. Thus, carry a sleeping bag, liner, and warm socks. A lightweight thermal base layer also helps to keep you warm during cold nights.
Although the risk of altitude sickness is low during the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, trekkers must be aware of its symptoms. They must take care of their health and not over-exert themselves. At the same time, as you ascend to a higher elevation, trek gradually and at a steady pace. If you feel sick or experience any symptoms of altitude sickness, let your guide know immediately. Carry first aid supplies and medications that can come in handy during injuries or emergencies.
Always book the trek from a reliable trek agency like Dream Himalaya Adventure. They not only provide you with the right itinerary but also the necessary logistics. Similarly, they help to arrange the transportation, accommodation, and permits for the journey. They also provide an experienced guide and porter to make the trek journey safer. While trekking, you must always have a positive mindset. The weather is unpredictable, facilities are basic, and the trails are demanding. Hence, you need to stay motivated and plan a flexible itinerary for an enjoyable experience.
Most brochures often provide glossy pictures and stories of ABC. While they are true, the real experience may not be as glamorous as it seems. There are some lesser-discussed and known realities that every trekker must know. Here are some hidden secrets or realities that you will not find in the brochures:
