Introduction Makalu Base Camp Trek

Mt. Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world at 8,463m. It is an isolated peak, located just 22 km east of Mount Everest between Everest and Kanchenjunga, on the Nepali-Tibetan border. Its size alone is impressive, but its structure, that of a perfect pyramid with four sharp ridges, makes this mountain all the more spectacular. It has proved to be not only a beautiful peak but also challenging. Previously, it had been admired and studied by several Everest parties and it was first climbed by the French in 1955.

One of the most popular trekking destinations among solitary trekkers, Makalu Base Camp offers an exceptional opportunity to explore high-altitude terrains, snow-clad landscapes, and ethnic Himalayan lifestyle. Makalu base camp is situated at Sherson (4700m), a lovely high grazing area close to the tip of the Barun Glacier, which is surrounded by an awe-inspiring array of Himalayan peaks. It is important to note that this is a holiday for the connoisseur of Himalayan trekking and those with an adventurous spirit. Teahouses/lodge accommodation we will be using is of a more basic standard than that found in the popular trekking areas, such as the Khumbu. This is one of the only disadvantages of trekking in such a pristine, remote and little-visited area.

Journey Outline

Our journey begins with an hour-long flight to Tumlingtar above the Arun River, whereas the real trek starts from Num. From here, our trekking route takes us through pretty terraced farmland and a number of delightful villages, before climbing to cross the Shipton La (4,125m). At the high points of this classic trekking holiday, the views extend from Makalu to distant Kangchenjunga (World’s 3rd highest peak (8,586m). We have a full day to explore above Sherson, gaining surprising views of the Kangshung (east) Face of Everest as well as close-up perspectives of the impressive Chamlang and of Makalu's towering South Face. The lower reaches of the trail are renowned for their lushness with verdant rhododendron forests whereas the upper reaches of the trail comprise of polished granite cliffs capped by hanging glaciers, overflowing with waterfalls. The Makalu Base Camp Trek is an ideal choice for avid trekkers and nature enthusiasts who seek solace and tranquility in pristine natural habitat and those who wish to avoid crowds.

Fitness Requirements for the Trek

This kind of trek is challenging but doesn’t really require previous trekking and mountaineering experiences and also doesn’t require any technical experience. But if you have any previous experiences would be really helpful. Your fitness is really important for this trek; therefore we strongly suggest preparing yourself in good physical condition. You need to be trained at least for about 3 to 5 months to prepare yourself as a strong candidate.

You can go to the fitness center every morning for about 1.5 hours, do hiking every weekend with increasing weights on your pack, manage some time for cycling for a couple of hours for 2 or 3 times a week. However, at the high altitude, there might be little symptoms of altitude illness like mild headache, fatigue, etc. but take it as normal and just drink enough water (4 – 5 liters) every day. On this trek, you need to be able to hike 4 – 8 hours over hilly terrain up to 5,500m of altitude with a daypack.

Value of Previous Experience

If you have any previous experiences would be helpful but if you don’t have is also not an important matter of issue. This trek will introduce you to trekking in the Himalayas and also about the local cultures, traditions, and local people. Even if you are around the age of 65 years, you can be a candidate for this trek.
