Kanchenjunga Trekking

Mt. Kachenjunga (8,586m/28,198ft) is the third highest mountain in the world and it was first climbed by the British team in 1956. This region offers an endless variety of culture and changing countryside as it proceeds from terraced fields, forests of birch, bamboo and verities of rhododendrons. We pass through the villages of Limbu, Brahmins Chhetries in the lower part and enter into the territory of Sherpas settlements in the mountain area.

This area lies in far east of Nepal connected with the border India and China. if any one is looking for crowded less and completely adventurous trekking destination in Nepal, this is simply the best for you. The landscape of the area is ideal environment and home for the several wild animals including the snow leopard and one of the main habitat for the red panda which is known as one of the most endangered species of the world.

The trekking cost really depends on length of trekking period, group size, service standard etc. but Kanchenjunga area is in far east Nepal, due to the remoteness therefore trekking cost could be little more than other normal regular trekking destinations. The teahouses facilities are pretty basic in the area, you probably wont get most of the meals you wishes to eat however peoples are friendly and helpful. This area is also restricted area and need special trekking permit, it cost USD 20.00 per/week, which can be granted from the Department of Immigration, Kathmandu. Regarding the meals, hot drinks and accommodation cost in the area, it cost approximately USD 40.00 per/day per/person. Of course the local transportation, domestic flight cost, hotel accommodation, trekking guide fee, porter fees are additional. Can bag packers go on Kanchenjunga Trekking?

As Kanchenjunga area is restricted and need special permission, therefore bag packer can’t go on this trek on his/her own, to get special permission from Department of Immigration, it must be through one of the registered trekking agency and local guide must be hired, therefore Kanchenjunga trekking is only possible joining with registered trekking agency.   

Kanchenjunga Trek Difficulties

As compared to other treks in Nepal, Kanchenjunga Trek is also considered as challenging. Most of the trekkers may get confused that either it will require technical expertise or mountaineering skills or not. Actually, it doesn’t require any kind of technical expertise and mountaineering skills. People of all ages and gender can complete Kanchenjunga trek however the high level of fitness is necessary and at least of few month fitness training is highly recommended as a preparation of the trek.

There are few options of the trek in the area, 20 to 25-days length of the trek, unfortunately less than 2-weeks trek is not possible in Kanchenjunga area. You can the circuit/round trek, 24/25-days trek exploring the North/South base camp, or 20/21-days trek just to the North Base camp trek. If you train well, keep you in high level of fitness, then normally there will be maximum chances of completing the trek without any major issues. The most difficulty part is its length of the trek and to cope up with its high altitude over 4000m up to 5500m. AMS is always most challenging aspects of the high altitude trek.

Best time for Kanchenjunga Trekking

The best time for Kanchenjunga trek is Mar to May in spring season and (Sep – Nov) in autumn season. These two seasons as an ideal time in terms of clear weather, blue sky day, not extreme temperature plus less rain. More over  the surrounding will be encumbered with the multi-color blooming flowers with green plants, which will add more excitement and good feelings.

How is teahouse facility in Kanchenjunga Area?

Until now (early 2020) the local teahouses are in the stage of getting improving, however the facilities limited, normally you can simply get local traditional meals, dhalbhat with curry, noodles etc. Accommodation is very basic, only local standard, therefore if you are not friendly with such accommodation, taking personal tent is highly recommended, therefore local meals and dhalbhat is not your preferred meal, and wishes to have western cuisine in the menu, its best to take camping package trek, but if you are friendly with local meals and accommodation and tried it before, you can enjoy the local teahouse based trek option. In terms cost, local teahouses based trek is much more affordable than camping trek.
