We will cross suspension bridges and walk through dispersed houses of Zapute, Benkar, and Chumoa to reach Monjo. There is an entrance to Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo. We need to complete the required formalities for the national park before entering. The park is rich in Himalayan herbs, plants, mammals, and birds. Hence, it is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From Monjo, the trail descends along the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi Rivers. We will descend to the Hillary Suspension Bridge, existing at the base of the hill. It is one of the highest and thrilling bridges along the Kyajo Ri Expedition route. After crossing the bridge, we will follow the ascending path towards Namche Bazaar. The path offers stunning views of Mount Everest, Thamserku, Lhotse, and other nearby mountains. It is a steep uphill climb through forests of conifers for the final stretch of our trek. Namche Bazaar serves as the major trade centre for local and neighbouring Tibetan trade. The town is also popular as the “Capital of Sherpas”. It is a popular and strategic acclimatization stop for those trekking in the Everest region. To help with proper acclimatization to the changing altitude, we can arrange a day hike to the small villages of Khumjung and Khunde.
Our hike takes us above Namche, and the trail follows a winding ridge. We will pass by Syangboche Airstrip, one of the highest airfields in the world. The airstrip offers gorgeous panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku. We will continue ascending uphill to Khumjung. It is a beautiful Sherpa village, home to Khumjung Monastery and Sir Edmund Hillary School. Visit the local monastery and observe the “Yeti scalp.” Similarly, explore the school and the village to witness local life.
From Khumjung, we will take a hike to Khunde village. There is a Hillary Hospital here that offers a beautiful view of Mount Ama Dablam and other surrounding peaks. The National Park head office, the Museum, and the monasteries are interesting places near Namche. With the remaining time, we can explore Namche Bazaar and its narrow alleyways. We can find a few modern facilities, including a post office. Likewise, the town is home to many restaurants, shops, and bakeries. We will stay overnight in Namche.

After breakfast, we will leave Namche and begin our ascent to Syangboche Airport. Along the way, we can get stunning views of Mount Ama Dablam and Thamserku. The Kyajo Ri Expedition trail continues along a walking trail to Khumjung village, one of the largest villages in the Khumbu region. We will enjoy the spectacular view of Khumbila Peak (5,761 m), located above Khumjung village. Khumbila Peak is considered a sacred peak and the home of guardian gods. Therefore, climbing Khumbila Peak is strictly prohibited.
Walking along the lower slopes of Khumbila, we will continue into the rhododendron and birch forest. The trail then opens up into the grassy slopes to Mongla. Trekking along the grassy ridge, we can get the gorgeous scenery of the Dudh Koshi Valley below. Similarly, the path allows scenic views of Phortse village. The winding trail continues going uphill until we reach Mong La on a top, after having lunch there, we will descent straight down to Phortse Tenga where we will stay overnight in Teahouse.

On this day, we will follow the descending trail along the stupa in Mongla to the Dudhkoshi River. It is a steep descent through forests of rhododendron and pines. We can get a glimpse of Ama Dablam and Khumbila along the way. Crossing the river over a suspension bridge at Phortse village, we will climb high above the valley to the ridge. It gradually climbs up through brich, juniper, and conifer trees. We can also see panoramic views of Kantega, Thamserku, and Ama Dablam. Walking along the tree lines, we will pass by Yak Kharka at Tongba (4,015m) and Gyele (4,050 m) on our way to Dole (4,200m).
Following the steep, narrow trail, we will reach the top of the ridge. We will walk past Lhabarma (4,220 m) and reach Luza (4,360 m). The landscape also changes from green vegetation to yak pastures. Passing through scrub, we will climb along the side of the valley to reach Machhermo (4,410m). This area is known as the native land of the mythical ape-man, the Yeti. Locals believe the Yeti was first sighted in Machhermo in 1974. Few teahouses in Machhermo offer accommodation. We will stay overnight in Machhermo.

We will leave Machhermo and trek through Dudh Koshi Valley to Gokyo village. It begins with a gradual ascent that opens into a small pasture. We will come across a memorial built in honor of climbers who lost their lives during the Everest expedition. The trail leads us to Phanga village (4,480m), which offers spectacular views of Everest, Thamserku, Nuptse, and other peaks. From Phanga, the Kyajo Ri Expedition path becomes narrow. It follows the river, small streams, and glacial moraine.
Making our way through moraine and rock, we will get the first view of the three Gokyo Lakes. We will first reach the first Gokyo Lake, Longponga Tsho. Then, we will pass the second Gokyo Lake, Taujung Tsho. As we move further, the air becomes cooler and thinner. Then, we will walk through Nepal’s largest Ngozumpa Glacier, taking in the pleasant views of Kantega Peak and Cho Oyu (8,153 m). It takes us to the third Gokyo Lake, Dudh Pokhari. Then, we will descend to the Gokyo village and spend the night at Gokyo Lake.

It is a steep uphill climb, and the high altitude makes the air thinner. So, breathing becomes more demanding, and climbing becomes more laborious. We will reach the top of Ranjo Pass in about 3 to 4 hours. Upon reaching the top, we can enjoy spectacular views of majestic Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Cholatse, and Tabuche peak.
We will descend from the pass on the stone steps downhill to the glacial lake. The trail continues along the glacial lake. The landscape changes from barren alpine ridges into yak pastures. We will continue descending into the Bhote Koshi Valley. Walking through the small Sandikharka village, we will head towards Lungden. The winding trail goes alongside the river. We will take breakfast early in the morning at Lungden (4,300m). The Kyajo Ri Expedition trail descends along the Bhite Koshi River. It passes through small Sherpa villages with traditional stone houses and yak pastures. The scenic path offers us the opportunity to experience the Sherpa lifestyle in the Himalayas. Along the way, we will pass by the villages like Marulung and Taranga. The trail runs along the river, offering views of rugged cliffs and waterfalls. Similarly, we will pass by several stupas, mani walls, prayer flags, and chortens. There are a few suspension bridges that add to the thrill of today’s journey.
We will move through the ancient trade route between Nepal and Tibet to the small village of Thame. People from Tibet had to cross the Nagpa La Pass to reach Namche Bazaar, where they traded salt with the locals of Khumbu. Hence, they used to use this ancient route. The final trekking section takes us through juniper-covered slopes and terraced fields. It takes us to Thame, one of the oldest Sherpa villages of the region. It is also the hometown of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa. Tonight, we will rest in Thame.

Thame is a small village offering scenic views of the surrounding Himalayas. We will enjoy a hearty breakfast while taking in the views and the serene atmosphere. The trail begins with a gentle ascent through pine and juniper forests. It opens up into a secluded side valley. From here, we can get gorgeous mountain views of Kongde Ri, Kusum Kanguru, and Thamserku. The area is secluded and less frequented by trekkers. Hence, we can experience true Himalayan wilderness.
After trekking for a while, we make a short climb to Mende, where we will arrive at the junction point. We will depart from the main route and follow the narrow yak trail to the pass. Crossing the pass, we will reach Kyajo Drangka valley. It is located to the south of Kyajo Ri. There are small stone shepherd huts and open meadows. We will trek deeper into the valley and reach Kyajo Kharka. Rather than a village, it is an alpine grazing area. Stay overnight at Kyajo Kharka in a tent or camp, as there are no lodgings in the area.

From Kyajo Kharka, we will follow the pretty path with views of Thamserku, Kusum Kangaru, Pacharmo, and other surrounding peaks. The trail ascends gently along a yak trail. It follows a small stream through alpine meadows. As we climb higher, the vegetation becomes sparse. We will mostly trek on rocky slopes and glacial moraines. Similarly, we will be surrounded by rugged cliffs and icy ridges. On clear days, we can see the pyramid-shaped summit of Kyajo Ri.
After trekking for a while, the trail becomes rougher. We will cross boulder fields and lateral moraines along the way. A short climb from Kyajo Kharka will take us to the flat surface near the river between the mountains. Glaciers and rocky ridges surround the area. We can see the panoramic view of the Kyajo Ri and the surrounding peaks from here. We will set up our camp and spend the night at Kyajo Ri Base Camp.

Today we plan to carry some loads to Camp I at the foot of the glacier. It is a long way, over some pretty rough ground. We will walk up a steep, rocky trail along a moraine ridge. The Kyajo Ri Expedition route also includes a rocky section with boulders and pebbles to reach Camp I. The camp is located on a flat platform near the base of Kyajo Ri’s southwest face.
From Camp I, we have good views of our route to the summit, up the left-hand skyline of the mountain. Similarly, we can see a gorgeous view of Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and other surrounding peaks. Today’s climb also serves as acclimatization training. We will spend some time at Camp I organizing equipment. Then, we will return to base camp in the afternoon.

On this day, we will leave the Base Camp and head to Camp I. We will gradually ascend a moraine ridge. After trekking for a while, the trail becomes steeper and rougher. We will navigate boulders and loose scree. The landscape also changes into alpine. We will walk through the glacier section and cross glacier lakes. Along the way, we can witness Mount Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Arakam Tse. We do not need to use crampons today.
For the final stretch, we will make a short and steep climb over mixed terrain of snow and rock. We have to ascend with the help of fixed ropes to get to Camp I. It takes us to a small plateau, under Kyajo Ri’s southwest face. Camp I has sufficient space for the group and is near the Glacier. We can see the climbing route that we will take on the following day. Following the South West Ridge, we plan to conquer the summit. We pitch our camp near a big glacier lake and stay there overnight.

Today is another challenging day for us. We will leave Camp I and head towards Camp II. The climb begins early, before sunrise. It is because the morning weather is more stable and the snow is firmer. We will gradually climb uphill on a snow-covered ridge. With every step, the Kyajo Ri Expedition route becomes steeper. The climb becomes more demanding and technical from the middle section. We must climb 40–55° angled ice and snow slopes. Hence, we will use fixed ropes, ice axes, and crampons to help us with the climb.
Following the Sherpa guides and the safety lines they fixed the previous day, we will reach the Col or Camp II. The Kyajo Ri Col is situated on a narrow, exposed ridge below the main summit. From here, we can witness gorgeous panoramic views of Mount Everest, Ama Dablam, Cho Oyu, and Thamserku. Upon reaching the Col, we will be provided with Basic High Altitude Food. Then, we will prepare for the next day’s climbing and spend the night at Camp II.

Finally, today is the day when we will summit Kyajo Ri. Since this is going to be a long climb, we will begin our trek early at about 3.00 a.m. Climbing will be challenging. However, it becomes a little less demanding thanks to Sherpa guides. They will already have set up the ropes and ice screws before our climb. After a light breakfast, we start to climb through the rocky part with big boulders using our headlamps. The lower section of the Kyajo Ri Expedition route is steep with a mix of rock and ice terrain. Similarly, we must come across the snow slopes with an incline of 45–55°.
As we ascend to higher altitudes, the climb becomes more technical. The trail to Kyajo Ri summit becomes narrow ridges and short, steep ice sections. It will test our physical strength, stamina, and endurance. Likewise, it also requires the use of mountaineering gear. We will be following the southwest route to reach the summit. After navigating tricky sections and exposed areas, we will steadily make our way to the summit of Kyajo Ri. A grand view of Mount Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and Thamserku greets us.
We will spend some time at the summit to celebrate and capture the historic moment on camera. After enjoying the epic views of the surrounding mountains, we will descend to Camp I. Descending is equally challenging and requires careful navigation. Upon reaching our Camp, we will enjoy a well-earned hot meal and rest. Tonight, we will sleep at Camp I.

Our 6,000m expedition peaks are physically and technically challenging climbing trips. Your fitness level is significant for this trip. Therefore, we suggest preparing yourself for a high level of physical fitness. You do not need to be an athlete, but a good level of overall fitness is essential. Being fit will certainly improve your chances of reaching your chosen summit. As an indication, you should be able to walk 8 km / 5 miles with a maximum height gain of 800m/2,000ft with a 10kg rucksack in 5 hours or less.
To get ready for this challenge, you must train for at least 5 to 7 months to become a strong candidate. You can go to the fitness center every morning for about 2 hours, do hiking every weekend with increasing weights on your pack (i.e., 7kg, 10kg, 13 kg, 16kg, and up to 20kg), and manage some time for cycling for a couple of hours 3 or 4 times a week. However, during climbing, there may be slight symptoms of altitude illness, such as a mild headache and fatigue. Take these as usual and drink a lot of water (4–5 liters) every day. On this trek, you will need to be able to hike 6–10 hours over hilly terrain of up to 6,000 meters in altitude, carrying a daypack. On the summit push, extra effort is required to walk on ice and climb for up to 10–12 hours. We will have porters to carry our heavy camping equipment, food, and also the climbing gear.
All of our 6,000m expedition trips are accessible to experienced trekkers and those who have completed some climbing trips in European mountains, seeking another challenge in the Himalayas. This trip will be helpful if you want to gain some knowledge about mountaineering and have a plan to climb the higher and more challenging mountains.
If you have any previous mountaineering experiences and have knowledge of using mountaineering gear, it increases the chances of reaching the summit. Similarly, skills like rock and ice climbing are a plus. Although prior trekking and mountaineering experience is recommended, no technical experience is required. Those participating in one of the technical climb peaks must have good knowledge about how to use mountaineering climbing gear (i.e., crampons, ice axe, harness, ropes, jumars, prussiks, abseiling, moving past knots, anchors, etc.).Crampons provide maximum grip, and harnesses and ropes offer maximum safety during climbing. However, for those who lack mountaineering experience and skills but possess a high level of fitness, our guides will provide introductory training sessions on using climbing gear during the rest/acclimatization days. So we always ensure the team’s safety and a successful climb to the peak.
Kyajo Ri lies in the northeastern part of Nepal, close to the Tibetan border. It is truly a hidden gem of the Khumbu region, known only to a few. Kyajo Ri is a technical alpine peak at 6,186 meters. It is a part of the Khumbu Himal subrange. The peak lies to the north of the Namche Bazaar and east of Thame Village.
The Kyajo Ri Peak has a striking pyramidal summit. It neighbours the iconic peaks Ama Dablam (6,812 meters) to the east and Thamserku (6,623 meters) to the west. Surrounded by glacial moraines, remote valleys, and alpine pastures, the Kyajo Ri Expedition route is less traveled and quiet. Its diverse landscapes and changing scenery offer a unique geography experience. You will navigate rocky ridges, boulders, glacial debris, and snow slopes to reach the summit.
You will start the expedition with a flight to Lukla. From here, you will begin your trek to Kyajo Ri Base Camp (4,600 meters). Along the way, you will pass by beautiful Sherpa villages like Namche Bazaar, Machhermo, Gokyo, Thame, and more. You will go from the lower subtropical region to the alpine zones to the glacial and perpetual snow zones. The actual expedition to Kyajo Ri starts from the base camp. There are multiple high camps along the route to the summit. Here is an altitude profile of the Kyajo Ri Expedition:
| Climatic zone | Altitude range (meters) | Areas along the route | Characteristics |
| Lower Temperate Zone | 2,500 – 3,000 | Lukla, Phakding |
|
| Upper Temperate Zone | 3,000 – 3,800 | Namche Bazaar, Thame |
|
| Subalpine Zone | 3,800 – 4,200 | Between Thame and Kyajo Valley |
|
| Alpine Zone | 4,200 – 5,000 | Kyajo Ri Base Camp |
|
| Subnival/ Periglacial Zone | 5,000 – 5,500 | Camp I |
|
| Nival/ Glacial Zone | 5,500 – 6,186 | Camp II and Kyajo Ri summit |

Kyajo Ri is a remote Himalayan peak that lies deep in the Khumbu region. Its isolated location, altitude, and accessible route make it an ideal peak for mountaineers seeking a tranquil climbing experience. It is also a perfect training ground for those who want to attempt a higher mountain expedition in the future.
Kyajo Ri is an isolated peak in the Khumbu region of the Everest area. Although it neighbors iconic mountains like Everest or Ama Dablam, Kyajo Ri is largely unknown. It is also a newer expedition peak, opened for commercial climbing in 2002. Hence, there are only a few mountaineers who have reached its summit.
The Kyajo Ri Peak was largely unknown before its first ascent in 2002. During the 1950s and 1960s, British and Swiss expeditions documented peaks like Thamserku and Kusum Kanguru. However, they did not identify Kyajo Ri. Following a more detailed survey of the Khumbu Himal region by the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) and modern cartographers, the peak was added to the maps.
A Franco-British expedition team led by John Town first summited Kyajo Ri the same year it was opened for climbing. They reached the summit via the southwest ridge route. It has become the standard route climbers use today. After the successful climb of Kyajo Ri, it has become one of the newest “Trekking Peaks” opened for mountaineers. It combines adventurous climbing with technical skills and raw wilderness. Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) has also officially recognized it as a Group A expedition Peak.
Kyajo Ri Peak is gradually gaining attention from climbers and mountaineers worldwide. Although demanding, it is an accessible and achievable 6,000-meter peak. Many mountaineers undertake the Kyajo Ri Expedition to train for higher Himalayan summits. This new expedition peak offers a true Himalayan adventure that balances challenge, discovery, and tranquility.
The Kyajo Ri glacier headwall is the most technical section of the expedition. The headwall is the steepest upper part of a glacier. It is where ice builds up and flow slows. Similarly, it is also the part where the slope becomes very steep. On Kyajo Ri, the glacier headwall connects the high col or Camp II to the peak’s summit. The terrain is a mix of hard snow, firn, blue ice, and rocky steps. It is also exposed to the wind.
Although big icefalls are rare, crossing the headwall is risky. The route is covered with snow, and there can be hidden crevasses and wind-loaded slopes. It is especially dangerous in bad weather or after heavy snowfall. The Kyajo Ri glacier headwall has steep ice and sections with inclines of 50–60°. When the climber or guide says, “Kyajo Ri 60-degree ice,” it means it is a technical section. Climbers will need not only technical climbing skills but also the use of mountaineering gear, such as ice axes and crampons. At such a steep headwall, climbers need careful footing and secure axe placements. The high altitude and thin air make the climb more challenging and tiring.
The route from Camp II to the summit is rated French Alpine Grade D, indicating the technical difficulty of the climb and the skills required. The Kyajo Ri 60-degree ice, exposure, short technical Camp II summit push pitches, and challenging navigation make the climb technically demanding. Therefore, steady climbing, efficient use of ropes and gear, altitude management, and careful decision-making in alpine weather lead to the successful summiting of Kyajo Ri Peak.
The Kyaji Drangka Valley lies between Machermo Peak to the west and Pharilapcha to the east. Due to its altitude range and geographical structure, the valley has a unique microclimate. It makes navigating the climb tricky. The general climate of the valley is cold alpine, with significant temperature changes during the day and night.
As you enter the valley and gradually ascend to Kyajo Ri, the passage becomes narrow and steep. The Machermo Peak–Pharilapcha ridge creates a narrow, V-shaped passage. Hence, the air masses from the Goky and Bhote Koshi Valleys are compressed and move faster as they pass through the passage. It creates a Venturi or wind-tunnel effect, causing strong winds. The wind speed increases significantly across the summit ridge of Kyajo Ri and the south-west face.
During midday, the wind speed in the upper valley can exceed 60–80km/h. There are often sudden wind shifts due to changes in the pressure gradient across the valley. The high winds can make it more challenging to climb the rope and balance while ascending the southwest face or the summit ridge. Usually, mornings are calmer. The wind speed starts to pick up from late morning to afternoon. It peaks at around 1 to 3 p.m. Hence, climbers prefer to ascend to the summit early in the morning.
The climatic and wind conditions also vary depending on the season. Here is the seasonal pattern:
| Season | Climatic conditions | Wind patterns |
| Spring (March – May) | Clear skies, mild temperatures, and occasional late-afternoon snow showers | Gusts develop late morning or afternoon, especially on the southwest face and summit ridge |
| Summer (June – August) | Frequent clouds, poor visibility, and possible rain/ snow | Weak wind, but it may change suddenly with storms |
| Autumn (September – November) | Clear skies, stable weather, and excellent visibility | Gusts peak late morning to early afternoon (60–80 km/h) along exposed ridges |
| Winter (December – February) | Clear skies, extremely cold, and low humidity | Venturi effect increases the gust speed, and the cold northwest wind blows all day, especially at exposed ridges and the Kyajo Ri summit |
