In the morning, after breakfast, we will organize a half-day sightseeing tour, during which you will take a memorable UNESCO Heritage Tour. Tour begins with a visit to Nepal’s holiest Pashupatinath Temple Complex and takes us through Nepal’s largest Bouddhanath Stupa and 2500-year-old Swoyambhunath Stupa.
Pasupatinath is one of the holiest Hindu temples in Nepal. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and sits at the banks of the Bagmati River. The atmosphere around the temple feels very spiritual. You can see sadhus, sacred rituals, and even cremation ceremonies at the riverbank. Similarly, you can hear the sound of bells, conch shells, hymns, and prayers. The air is also filled with the smell of incense.
Boudhanath Stupa is the central spiritual hub for Tibetan Buddhists in Nepal. It is one of the largest stupas in the world. The stupa is a massive white dome topped by a golden spire. The spire has Buddha’s all-seeing eyes looking in all four directions. You can see pilgrims and monks performing clockwise circumambulation, spinning prayer wheels, and chanting mantras. The stupa symbolizes the path of enlightenment, and the entire atmosphere feels very serene and spiritual.
You can also choose to visit Swayambhunath instead of Boudhanath Stupa. Also known as the “Monkey Temple,” it sits atop a hill overlooking the Kathmandu Valley. Swayambhunath is also one of the country’s holy and ancient Buddhist sites. Like Boudhanath Stupa, its structure also features a white dome and a golden spire with Buddha’s eyes on all sides. Thirteen golden tiers on the spire symbolize different stages of enlightenment. The stupa is surrounded by many shrines that show religious harmony between Hindus and Buddhists.
We will return to the hotel in the afternoon, and have time for shopping for any missing items, packing, and getting ready for the trip.

After an early morning breakfast, we will continue our Upper Dolpo Trekking by following the Phoksundo Khola. It is an easy walk through dense conifer forests. We may have to ascend small ridges and descend along the way. Similarly, we will cross a few wooden bridges.
The trail takes us to Sumduwa, where there is a small checkpoint. There is also a Ranger post and a junction in Sumduwa. From here, we will head north. The trail becomes steeper and narrower as we leave Sumduwa. Leaving the Suligad River, we will ascend to the top of the ridge through pine and birch forest. As we climb higher, the forest becomes thinner. We can enjoy stunning views of valleys and the confluence of the Suligad and Phoksundo Rivers. Upon climbing the top of the ridges, we can enjoy the views of the 300-meter waterfall (one of Nepal’s highest waterfalls) and Phoksundo Lake.
The trail descends through birch forest to the Phoksundo River. There are also fluttering, colorful prayer flags adorning the route. Moving on, the forest opens up, and we will reach the traditional Tibetan-style settlement of Ringmo. Many walls and chortens surround the settlement. It is also home to the Dolpo-pa people, who practice the Bon religion. A brief and gentle walk from Ringmo will take us to Phoksundo Lake. We will take our first rest or acclimatization day at Phoksundo Lake. Today, we will explore around the lake and also take a short trek to Ringmo village.
The Phoksundo Lake is the deepest and second-largest lake of Nepal. Although its mineral-rich water is clear, there is no aquatic life. The lake is sacred to both the Bon and Buddhist communities. According to the local myth, the lake was created when a powerful spirit flooded a demon’s lair. Thus, the surrounding is decorated with prayer flags and chortens. Locals also perform various annual rituals here. We will trek along the southern shore of the lake and enjoy the views of the Kanjiroba Himal and other surrounding peaks. The area around the lake is a perfect spot for taking photos.
After exploring around the lake, we will next visit the Ringmo village. It is a centuries-old Bon settlement on a small plateau beside the lake. We can see traditional stone houses with flat roofs, mani walls, and prayer flags. Similarly, we will also visit Tshowa Gompa, the local Tibetan Buddhist Monastery, which is over 900 years old. The monastery houses beautiful murals, local deity statues, butter lamps, and ancient manuscripts. The visit is a rich experience for learning about the Bon and Buddhist cultures and religions. After the visit, we will return to Phoksundo Lake and spend the night there.

After a hearty breakfast, we will continue our Upper Dolpo Trek adventure. We will begin with a walk along the western bank of Phoksundo Lake. The trekking trail is carved into cliffs and becomes narrow and rocky. There are also some exposed ridges along the way. We will then walk through Devil’s Trail, which is named for its extreme remoteness. The path stretches on pegs, passing through crevasses from here. In several places, we will come across the trail supported by wooden pegs fixed into the rock. Crossing these sections is thrilling and will test your balance, but it is entirely safe.
As we trek forward, the trail opens up into a lush green meadow. We can see juniper and alpine shrubs dotted along the way. Passing through the green meadow, we will reach the floodplain of Phoksundo Khola. We will cross the glacial river that flows through a broad valley. The landscape further changes to open grasslands as we get closer to the Phoksundo River. We prepare our camp at the edge of the Phoksundo River for an overnight stay. This kind of trek is challenging but doesn’t really require previous trekking and mountaineering experiences and also doesn’t require any technical experience. But if you have any previous experiences would be helpful. Your fitness is really important for this trek; therefore we strongly suggest preparing yourself in good physical condition. You need to be trained at least for about 3 to 5 months to prepare yourself as a strong candidate.
You can go to the fitness center every morning for about 1.5 hours, do hiking every weekend with increasing weights on your pack, manage some time for cycling for a couple of hours for 2 or 3 times a week. However, at the high altitude, there might be little symptoms of altitude illness like mild headache, fatigue, etc. but take it as normal and just drink enough water (4 – 5 liters) every day. On this trek, you need to be able to hike 4 – 8 hours over hilly terrain up to 5,500m of altitude with a daypack.
If you have any previous experiences would be helpful but if you don’t have is also not an important matter of issue. This trek will introduce you to trekking in the Himalayas and also about the local cultures, traditions, and local people. Even if you are around the age of 65 years, you can be a candidate for this trek.
The 25 Days Upper Dolpo Trek is a well-balanced itinerary with adequate acclimatization and gradual ascent, making it suitable for you. It is an ideal package that allows you to explore Dolpo’s high-altitude wilderness safely and in full. It allows you to focus on the adventure rather than on physical and mental stress.
The Upper Dolpo is one of the most isolated regions of Nepal. Its remoteness and geographical difficulty also make it a logistically challenging area. Additionally, you must trek on rugged trails and steep mountain passes. To combat these challenges, our 25-day itinerary is curated by experts on our team. So, our trip is well-paced for remote terrain and logistics. The average walking hours each day during the trek are around 6 hours. You will also have time for short breaks between all the walking. It is a reasonable trekking time and avoids physical over-exertion.
Similarly, our Upper Dolpo Trekking includes two acclimatization days at Phoksundo Lake (3,641 meters) and Shey Gompa (4,160 meters). The oxygen level at elevations above 3,600 meters is only 65% of that at sea level. Phoksundo Lake and Shey Gompa are at ideal elevations for acclimatization. There are also options for active hikes to follow the “climb high, sleep low” principle. According to the Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA), active acclimatization hikes are one of the best predictors of safe ascent above 4,000 m. Our strategic acclimatization minimizes the risk of altitude sickness and makes the journey more comfortable.
Another reason why our 25-day Upper Dolpo Trek suits you is the deep cultural and natural immersion. You will visit Buddhist monasteries and interact with locals. Although our itinerary may seem long, it provides you with enough time to experience the rich and pristine nature of Dolpo. Our itinerary offers a well-balanced adventure that follows the principles of safe high-altitude trekking. We provide authentic, rewarding trek experiences while operating in accordance with sustainable tourism guidelines.
Hidden within the Trans-Himalayan landscapes of Upper Dolpo is one of the world’s most well-preserved cultures and spiritual practices. Its remote location and controlled tourism have helped to preserve its ancient traditions and heritage. The locals here follow the ancient Bon religion, which has largely disappeared in other parts of the Himalayas. Similarly, Tibetan Buddhism is also widely followed here. During the trek, you will see that religion deeply influences the culture and lifestyles of the locals.
While on the Upper Dolpo Trek, you will witness one of the ancient pre-spiritual traditions of Tibet and the Himalayas, Bon. The founder and main enlightened teacher of Bon is Tonap Shenrab Miwoche. It is deeply connected with nature, animism, and shamanic rituals. The religion honors and respects natural forces, such as rivers, mountains, the sky, and spirits, as living entities. Bon beliefs still thrive in Upper Dolpo, especially in areas like Dho Tarap, Tinkyu, and Nisal. The Bon practitioners follow sacred texts written in Tibetan script.
You will notice that the Bon Gompas have a similar structure to Buddhist monasteries. However, the rituals are different. It focuses on appeasing local spirits, divination, healing, and purification. For example, the Bonpo monks circumambulate stupas counterclockwise, opposite to Buddhist practice. Bon religion has survived for centuries and continues to preserve its teachings in Upper Dolpo. Although fewer in number, it can still be seen in locals’ lifestyles, agricultural cycles, and healing practices.
Tibetan Buddhism was later introduced to the Dolpo region, but it is now the predominant religion. The Tibetan lamas who traveled across the Himalayas centuries ago brought it with them. Bon’s core beliefs are maintaining harmony with nature, moral living, and the worship of natural spirits. On the other hand, Tibetan Buddhism’s core belief is that enlightenment can be attained through the “Four Noble Truths and Eightfold Path.” It features deities such as the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and tantric deities such as Avalokiteshvara and Tara. The rituals of Tibetan Buddhism include meditation, chanting, mandalas, and tantric practices.
The most sacred site in Tibetan Buddhism in Upper Dolpo is Shey Gompa, or Crystal Monastery. Built in the 11th century, it is also known as the “Spiritual Heart of Dolpo.” Pilgrims gather at the monastery every 12 years to perform circumambulation. It is believed to cleanse one’s sins and bring spiritual merit. During the trek, you will come across many monasteries, mani walls, chortens, and stupas that reflect Tibetan Buddhist art and designs. The villagers chant mantras like “Om Mani Padme Hum” while spinning the prayer wheels.
The 25 Days Upper Dolpo Trekking offers an opportunity to witness the fusion between Bon and Tibetan Buddhism beliefs. They exist in perfect harmony, complementing one another, and are a fine example of religious tolerance. Many monasteries in the region incorporate elements from Bon and Buddhism. Similarly, the locals practice rituals from both religions. They consult with a Bon shaman for protection and seek blessings from Buddhist monks and lamas. This blend of two religions creates a unique cultural identity in Dolpo.
Among the major attractions of the Upper Dolpo Trek are the high mountain passes. During the trek, you will cross three high Himalayan Passes that are challenging and adventurous. They are as follows:
It is the first high pass that you will come across during the Upper Dolpo Trek. You will cross the pass from Phoksundo Bhanjyang to Shey Gompa. The Nangdala Pass is considered the gateway to inner Upper Dolpo. It takes you through alpine meadows, yak pastures, ridges, and steep rocky slopes. Ascending to the pass is very challenging because it is the highest of the others. You must climb up a steep and rocky trail to get to the top of Nangdala Pass. Strong winds, especially during midday, make the ascent more strenuous, so it is best to cross early. From the top of the pass, you can enjoy panoramic views of Crystal Mountain, Kanjirowa, Dhaulagiri, the Tibetan Plateau, and trans-Himalaya peaks. You will descend from the pass on rocky slopes, narrow trails, and yak pastures.
The second high Himalayan pass that you will cross during the Upper Dolpo Trek is Sela Pass. It is also known as Gela Pass. You will cross the pass on the way from Shey Gompa to Namgung Gaon. Although the Sela Pass is lower in elevation and less demanding, it is still challenging. You will ascend to the top of the pass through barren, rocky, and rugged terrain. Similarly, you will trek on loose scree that further makes the uphill climb difficult. You must be careful of the wind exposure and thin air. From the top of the Sela Pass, you can get spectacular views of Kanjirowa and Crystal Mountain. Likewise, you will get a view of Upper Dolpo’s arid plateaus and ridges. Descending from Sela Pass requires you to trek on rough terrain, passing by dry rocky slopes and sparse vegetation.
The third and the last major high Himalayan pass that you will pass is the Jyanthla Pass. It is on the route from Jyanthla Phedi to Tokyu. The pass is used when descending toward lower valleys. Ascending to Jyanthla Pass also requires you to climb uphill on steep and rocky terrain. There are also sections where you have to trek on the ridgelines. It is a challenging climb that will test you. Usually, the climb is scheduled before noon to avoid weather concerns. The pass is an excellent vantage point that offers the final panoramic views of the mountains. You can get clear views of the Dhaulagiri massif and the adjacent valley below. To descend, you must trek through gullies, cliffs, and narrow ridges on rugged terrain. Conquering this final pass will give you a huge sense of accomplishment.
Dolpo was previously known only to salt route traders and pilgrims to Tibet. Its isolated location and rough terrain made access extremely challenging. Moreover, the area was closed to foreigners until the late 20th century. The region first attracted international attention in the early 1900s. Scholars David Snellgrove and Giuseppe Tucci studied the language, culture, and religious practices around the Tibetan borderlands. The attention was limited and mostly received from anthropologists and explorers.
In 1978, Dolpo caught the world’s attention through Peter Matthiessen’s book, The Snow Leopard. It is classic travel literature. The book retells Matthiessen and naturalist George Schaller’s journey to Shey Gompa in 1973. They were there to study the rare snow leopard and the Himalayan blue sheep. But the search became a spiritual quest. He narrates their search for the rare animals with poetic descriptions of Dolpo’s scenic landscapes. The Snow Leopard became an international bestseller and won the National Book Award. It also introduced the world to Dolpo, a place few had seen.
The majestic beauty of Dolpo was even captured in the 1,999 Oscar-nominated film, Himalaya (also known as Caravan) by Eric Valli. While The Snow Leopard introduced Dolpo to readers, Himalaya brought it to the screen for the world. It was filmed for nine months entirely in Dolpo, mainly the route to Shey Gompa above the pristine Phoksundo Lake. The film portrays the life of salt traders and their ancient caravan journey. It also depicted intergenerational leadership conflicts among them. Similarly, he beautifully tells about their deep spiritual connection to the Himalayas. The featuring of real Dolpo villages and authentic cultural representation won the hearts of the audiences worldwide.
After Upper Dolpo was opened to trekkers in 1989, it drew the attention of adventurers and trek enthusiasts. Its unspoiled wilderness and remote trekking trails offer an authentic Himalayan experience unlike the commercialized trails. It is the last living high-altitude culture. Documentaries, trekking journals, photographs, and more continue to share stories of Dolpo and capture the world’s attention.
Upper Dolpo lies in the rainshadow region of western Nepal. It lies in the shadow of the Dhaulagiri Range that towers over 8,000 meters. The massive mountain blocks the monsoon winds blowing northward from the Bay of Bengal. It also prevents the rain clouds from crossing into Dolpo. So, the monsoon clouds never arrive here. The area remains dry and semi-arid. It looks similar to the high-altitude deserts of western Tibet.
Due to the rain shadow effect, Upper Dolpo remains accessible during the monsoon season (summer). You get to witness the views and bright trekking days even during this time of the year. Unlike the Everest and Annapurna regions, the trails are dry in the monsoon. The trekking trail goes through wind-swept valleys, barren cliffs, ridges, and rock formations. You will mostly see hardy shrubs and alpine grasses. The unique climate shapes the geography and the lifestyle of locals in Upper Dolpo. Moreover, it offers a unique trekking experience through desert-like, ancient landscapes, far from the monsoon.
