In the morning, we will do the final packing, check our gear and equipment, and get ready for the trek. If you need to do any last-minute shopping, you will have time for that after lunch in Kathmandu. After lunch, we will start our drive to Ramechhap. The road is mostly paved but can be bumpy with sharp turns in some parts.
Along the way, we will pass small villages, terraced fields, green hills, and rivers, all of which make the drive very scenic. And if you are someone who gets motion sickness, you should carry medicine with you as the drive takes 5 hours. On arrival in Ramechhap, we will check in at the Freedom Resort or a similar standard resort near the airport, and all meals will be provided.

Depending on our flight time, we will head to the Ramechhap airport, do the necessary check-in process, and take the short flight to Lukla. As the plane lifts, we will see sweeping Himalayan ridges stretch beneath, teasing us with peaks that will become our companions over the next weeks. Lukla’s airstrip, perched on steep slopes, is the gateway between the world we know and the wild frontier ahead.
After meeting the trekking crew and having breakfast in Lukla, we begin our walk. The trek from Lukla to Phakding is an easy hike along the Dudh Koshi River. The air here is fresh, and we will cross suspension bridges, pass through several small Sherpa villages, and walk through forests and farmlands. Tonight in Phakding, we savor our first night in a teahouse. We will enjoy simple food, a warm fireplace, and stories exchanged among trekkers. We will rest early to adjust and conserve energy.

On day 4, the Gokyo Renjo La Pass trek path takes us to Namche from Phakding. We will begin our trek after breakfast. We will follow the Dudh Koshi River upstream and cross a series of suspension bridges hung over the churning water. We will pass several villages like Zapute, Benkar, and Chumoa before reaching Monjo. Monjo is the entrance to Sagarmatha National Park. At Monjo, we will complete all the formalities and register our trekking permit to move further.
After Monjo, we will walk into more protected, higher mountain territory. Each step we climb upward gives wider views, peaks hiding in clouds, waterfalls on the slopes, and animals grazing in rocky meadows. We will descend to Hillary Bridge, which exists at the base of the hill. After crossing the bridge, we will make the steep climb to Namche Bazaar. Namche Bazaar is the main Sherpa town in the Everest region.
Here, we will find colorful houses cascading across cliffs, prayer wheels spinning in small monasteries, and shops displaying yak wool garments, baked goods, and trekking gear. In the evening, we can walk around Namche’s alleys, maybe sipping tea while watching sunset light catch peaks like Ama Dablam and Thamserku. Since today has a big gain in altitude, we will monitor signs for altitude sickness, drink plenty of water, and rest well in the teahouse.

Today, on our trek to Gokyo Renjo La Pass, we will take an acclimatization or rest day at Namche. However, a rest day doesn’t mean we will rest and lie in bed all day. Instead, we will walk to higher ground to help our bodies adjust to the altitude. The day starts with a steady uphill hike to the famous Everest View Hotel, a popular viewpoint where you can enjoy tea or coffee along with incredible views of Everest and Ama Dablam. After enjoying the scenery, we continue toward Khumjung Village, one of the Sherpa settlements in the region. Here, you can explore the local monastery, walk around the quiet village streets, and learn more about Sherpa life and culture.
The views along the way are truly beautiful. Ama Dablam stands very close, with its sharp ridges and hanging glaciers. The high peaks look stunning against the open valley sky. By the end of the day, you’ll feel your body getting used to the altitude as you move comfortably at higher elevations. After the hike, we return to Namche for the night.

Being properly acclimatized, we will follow the scenic path through rhododendron and juniper forest with close-up views of mountains at the backdrop to reach the pretty Sanasa village. We can see views of Mount Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Thamserku, and other peaks. Following the steep Gokyo Renjo La Pass trek path, we will cross the rhododendron forest to reach the viewpoint of Mongla. After capturing the views of the mountains from the viewpoint, we will descend to Phortse Thanga.
The trail escalates uphill from Phortse Thanga to Dole. Dole is a small village tucked into the mountain slopes. Being here, the views open, the air gets thinner, and we begin to feel the mountain’s presence in every breath. Needless to say, it’s a challenging day with steep and uneven trails. Along the way, we may see yak herders grazing in high pastures. Tonight, we will rest in Dole, layer up for the cold, and prepare for the higher climbs ahead.

Following the Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek itinerary, we will leave Dole after breakfast and trek along a steep, narrow trail through alpine terrain. We will walk past Lhabarma and Luza and then climb along rocky slopes with views of glaciers like Ngozumpa and scattered alpine flowers. Our pace remains moderate, and every step feels more delicate as the altitude takes effect.
Machhermo is a small high altitude village. It is quiet and serene, known locally as the land where the mythical Yeti was first sighted in 1974. Fewer people live here, so there are fewer accommodations, too. The teahouse here sits among rocky slopes, with wide horizons that shift as daylight moves. Overnight at Machhermo.

From Machhermo, the Gokyo Renjo La Pass route picks its way over rocky ridges and meadows. It also crosses sections of moraine or glacier runoff. We will trek through Dudh Koshi Valley toward Gokyo village. The trail passes Pangka with amazing views of Everest, Thamserku, Nuptse, and other peaks.
Along the way, we will also cross parts of the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in Nepal, and see the first views of three Gokyo Lakes: Longponga Lake, Taboche Tsho Lake, and Dudh Pokhari La. We will then descend slightly into Gokyo village and stay overnight in a teahouse. This is an important acclimatization stop to rest and prepare for the climb to Gokyo Ri and the crossing of Renjo La Pass.

Day 10 on the Gokyo Valley trek and Renjo La pass is another rest and acclimatization day. We will hike to Gokyo Ri in the early morning. It is a steep but rewarding climb that offers some of the best morning sunrise views in the Everest region. From the top of Gokyo Ri at 5,360 meters, we see close views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and other peaks, along with the views of the Gokyo Lakes below, which glows in morning sunlight.
After enjoying the views and taking photos, we will descend back to Gokyo village. The descent reminds us that coming down is part of the journey, too. It requires careful footing and a controlled pace. After returning to Gokyo, we will take a rest, enjoy the calm of the high lakes, and prepare mentally and physically for the high pass ahead.

We will wake up early to cross the trek’s most demanding section, Renjo La Pass. The path to Renjo La Pass is steep and rocky, sometimes icy, with alpine ridgelines where every step must be deliberate. When we are at the top of Renjo La, we can see incredible views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Cholatse, Tabuche, and other peaks and mountains in the Khumbu region.
At 5,340 meters, the pass rewards us with a vista that feels almost otherworldly; immense sky, sharp horizon, snow, and stone meeting in sweeping curves. After enjoying the views, we will trek down to Lungden via Renjo La Pass. We will descend through yak grazing areas and frozen lakes to Lungden. The walk downhill can be tough on the knees and muscles. However, the trekking trail becomes easier with grassy patches and small streams. In Lungden, we will stay overnight at a cozy teahouse.

Continuing our descent journey from Gokyo Lake Renjo La Pass, today we will trek to Namche from Lungden. We will walk through high pastures with mountains and glaciers still visible. But the best thing is that the trekking trail gradually becomes easier and more forested as we descend further. The air becomes thicker and breathing easier. We will also pass remote Sherpa villages, yak pastures, and mani walls.
When we arrive back in Namche Bazaar, it feels like re-entering civilization in the high Himalayas. There are busy lodges, shops, children’s laughter, teahouses with artwork and wood carvings. At Namche, we can rest well, do laundry, mingle with fellow sherpas and trekkers, and enjoy the lively atmosphere. Physically, this descent is gentle in elevation, but your knees can get sore.

We will leave Namche in the morning and follow the trail downhill through pine and rhododendron forests. Though the trail is familiar, it feels different now. Every view, every whisper of wind, every prayer flag carries memory. The altitude becomes less of a burden, and the scenery is vivid. We will cross familiar high suspension bridges over the Dudh Kosh River and pass through small Sherpa villages, including Phakding.
By afternoon, we will reach Lukla, the final stop of our trek. On one side, there’s joy in completing this Gokyo and Renjo La Pass trek, but on the other side, there is sadness that the remote mornings, icy passes, and close mountain views are left behind us. Nonetheless, in Lukla, we will rest, enjoy a warm meal, and celebrate with our trekking guides and porters. We will share our trekking experiences and stories as well. Nights in Lukla may be warm in comparison, but sleep comes with the satisfaction of accomplishment.

We will catch an early morning flight to Ramechhap from Lukla. The small aircraft glides above valleys and snowy peaks. It gives us one last aerial view of the Himalayas. When we land at Ramechhap, the high mountains will no longer be visible. Now, from Ramechhap, we will drive back to Kathmandu. Along the way, we will stop for breakfast or lunch, depending on the time.
Back in Kathmandu city, we will check into our hotel and finally relax with a hot shower and some rest. In the evening, we will gather for a special farewell dinner. Everyone will have stories to tell, photos to share, and gratitude to express to both guides and ourselves. It’s a warm close to an adventure filled with challenge, beauty, and lifelong memories. Stay overnight in a hotel in Kathmandu.

On this day, after breakfast, we will get ready for the guided city tours for about 3 hours. We will visit Kathmandu Valley’s UNESCO World Heritage sites. Ancient temples, stupas, palaces, and colorful markets reflect the city’s rich history and spiritual depth. In the afternoons and evenings, you’ll have free time to shop for your loved ones, family members, friends, and others.
This day also works as an emergency buffer in case of Lukla flight delays or other unforeseen circumstances. Under such conditions, we will catch a flight from Lukla to Ramechhap/Kathmandu on this day, and you will be transferred to the hotel. But if we’ve already returned on schedule, it becomes a well-deserved day of leisure after completing the trek.

This kind of trek is challenging but doesn’t really require previous trekking and mountaineering experiences and also doesn’t require any technical experience. But if you have any previous experiences would be really helpful. Your fitness is crucial for this trek; therefore we strongly suggest preparing yourself in good physical condition.
You need to be trained at least for about 3 to 5 months to prepare yourself as a strong candidate. You can go to the fitness center every morning for about 1.5 hours, do hiking every weekend with increasing weights on your pack, manage some time for cycling for a couple of hours for 2 or 3 times a week. However, at the high altitude, there might be little symptoms of altitude illness like mild headache, fatigue, etc. but take it as normal and just drink enough water (4 – 5 liters) every day. On this trek, you need to be able to hike 4 – 8 hours over hilly terrain up to 5,500m of altitude with a daypack.
If you have any previous experiences of similar grade trek would be helpful, but if you don’t have is also not a really important matter of issue. This trek will introduce you to high altitude trekking in the Himalayas and also about the local cultures, traditions, and local people.
Even if you are around the age of 65 years, you can be a candidate for this trek.
Acclimatization at Machhermo (4,470 meters) and Gokyo Village (4,790 meters) during the Gokyo Renjo La Pass trek is a strategic move to reduce the risk of altitude sickness. These stops let our bodies adjust to the high altitude. As we go higher, the air gets thinner and there is less oxygen. And climbing too quickly without proper rest makes us susceptible to early signs of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), like headaches, nausea, or loss of appetite. In serious cases, it can even become dangerous. That’s why we stop and rest in Machhermo and Gokyo Village before crossing the pass.
The first important stop is Machhermo at 4,470 meters. At this height, breathing becomes harder, and the body needs more time to adapt. Spending an extra night here makes a big difference. It helps you prepare for the even higher climbs ahead. Machhermo is also known for its rescue post, where trekkers can learn about altitude sickness and how to prevent it.
Gokyo Village, at 4,790 meters, is the final acclimatization stop before going over the pass. Trekkers usually spend two nights here. Many climb Gokyo Ri, a nearby viewpoint at 5,360 meters, to see Everest and other tall peaks. After enjoying the views, they return to sleep at a lower altitude in the village. This “climb high, sleep low” method helps the body get used to less oxygen safely. This helps the body adjust one last time before crossing the Renjo La Pass, which is over 5,300 meters.
The Gokyo Renjo La Pass trek is special because it brings three highlights together: Gokyo Ri, the Gokyo Lakes, and Renjo La Pass. Climbing Gokyo Ri (5,360 meters) is one of the best parts of the trek. From the top, you can see a 360° view of the Himalayas, including four of the highest mountains in the world, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. The climb is steep but short, usually done early in the morning. The sunrise here is magical, with light shining over glaciers and snowy peaks.
Just below the hill are the six beautiful turquoise Gokyo Lakes that look unreal against the white mountains. Similarly, crossing Renjo La Pass (5,340 meters) adds even more adventure. The pass is high and challenging, with rocky paths and sometimes snow. But the views from the top are worth the effort. Together, Gokyo Ri, the turquoise lakes, and Renjo La Pass show the very best of the Khumbu region.
The Gokyo Lake with Renjo La Pass Trek is considered a moderate to challenging trek. The main factors that contribute to difficulty are the high altitude and the tough pass crossing. Now talking about the trail, the first part of the trek from Lukla to Namche Bazaar and then up to Gokyo Valley is not too hard. The trails are clear, and the climb is gradual. But the hardest section comes when crossing the Renjo La Pass.
To cross the pass, we need to start early in the morning and climb steeply on rocky, snowy, or icy paths, depending on the season. Also, the thin air there makes the climb feel harder, and the trail is exposed to strong winds and cold. The way down from the pass is also trickier because of loose stones or slippery ice. On normal days, we will walk 5-7 hours, but on the pass crossing day, it can take 7-8 hours.
Furthermore, altitude is a big challenge on this trek. From Dole (day 6), the Gokyo Renjo La Pass trek trail stays above 4,000 meters, and stops like Gokyo, Gokyo Ri, and Renjo La Pass are close to or above 5,000 meters. At this height, oxygen is only about half of what it is at sea level. This means it will put extra pressure on our bodies, especially our hearts and lungs. Even fit trekkers can feel tired or get symptoms of altitude sickness. Because of this reason, this trek is suitable for people who have strong fitness, strong stamina, and some experience at high altitude trekking.
For trekkers who want even more adventure, the Renjo La Pass trek can be combined with the crossing of Cho La Pass (5,420 meters) and Kongma La Pass (5,535 meters). This longer route is called the Everest Three Passes Trek. This route connects the quiet Gokyo Valley, the Everest Base Camp region, and the Imja Valley, forming a big triangle across the Khumbu. Each pass has its own challenge and exciting part. Cho La Pass has a glacier crossing and a steep climb through a narrow section. Kongma La is the highest and most remote, with a wild, rocky landscape and wide views of Nuptse and the Amphu Lapcha peaks.
Needless to say, adding these passes to your Renjo La Pass trek makes the trek much harder. You will spend more days above 5,000 meters and walk 3–4 extra days. The journey is tiring and tests both body and mind. But the rewards are amazing. You will see Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu from many viewpoints. You will also cross all kinds of terrain, icy paths, rocky ridges, and high valleys. This trek feels like a real climbing adventure, even without technical gear.
Bonus point: You can do this combined trek in two ways. The anticlockwise route first crosses the Kongma La Pass, then Cho La, and finally Renjo La, following the classic Everest Base Camp trek trail. The clockwise route begins with Renjo La, then Cho La, and ends with Kongma La, passing through quiet villages like Thame, Lungden, Thamo, Dole, and Machhermo. The anticlockwise route offers gradual altitude gain.
