Introduction to Manaslu Circuit Trek

The word Manasalu is derived from a Sanskrit word  'MANASA' which means the spirit of Mountains. This trek was officially opened to tourists in 1991, which offers a unique opportunity to experience the relatively “untouched” region. This epic trip circumnavigates the entire massif with an insight into the cultures of ethnic Nepalese tribes and peoples of both Hinduism, Buddhism religion, but mountaineering expeditions have had long access to the area. In 1950 a party led by H.W. Tillman trekked from Thonje to Bimtang and col. Jimmy Roberts crossed the Larkya La (Pass) looking for an interesting mountain to climb. Manaslu (8,163m) was attempted by Japanese Expeditions every year from 1952 until 1956 when the first ascent was made. Having become known as "JapaneseMountain" much of the information about the area was available in Japanese. The Japanese continued to dominate the climbing scene of Manaslu until 1971. A few trekkers including peripatetic Hugh Swift managed to obtain a trekking permit for the region but otherwise, this trek always has been the domain of the mountaineering expedition.

Manaslu Round Trek is geographically spectacular and culturally fascinating circumnavigating Peak 29 (7,871m) Himal-Chuli (7,893m) and Boudha (6,672m). Much of this trek is in a region of strong Tibetan influence. We cross the Larkya- La (5,160m) and descend to the MarshyangdiRiver and further trek down to Besisahar from where we will drive back to Kathmandu.

Manaslu is a restricted area and there are certain formalities required by the government of Nepal in obtaining a special permit. Manaslu trek has mercifully light trek and even at the best time of the year, you will be meeting smattering of groups. Since 2010 this has become Nepal's newest 'tea-house' trek with the building of a lodge below the Larkya La pass (5,160m). Some lodges are currently still a little basic, so it remains for the adventurous. Though, without the need to camp, it's a fine trip for those seeking an unspoiled, tranquil Himal.

Manaslu Circuit Trek - Journey

Manaslu Circuit Trek begins from the Arughat, Dhading, the lush green lower land and then passing through many villages inhabitant by various ethnic groups along the Buri Gandaki River. The trail goes behind the Mt.Mansalu and Himculi to cross Larkya La pass (5,213 m) and Rupina La (14,450').

The landscape becomes more barren; topography resembling the Tibetan landscape. The trek is rewarded by descent into the Marshyandi valley with a delightful walk along the river and villages and concluding our trip at Beshishar nearby the LakeCity of Nepal, Pokhara. The trek is the only type that physically puts you closer to Tibet and its remote people.

Fitness Requirement for Manaslu Circuit Trek

Manaslu Circuit Trek is challenging but doesn’t really require previous trekking and mountaineering experiences and also doesn’t require any technical experience. But if you have any previous experiences would be really helpful. Your fitness is really important for this trek; therefore we strongly suggest preparing yourself in good physical condition. You need to be trained at least for about 3 to 5 months to prepare yourself as a strong candidate. You can go to the fitness center every morning for about 1.5 hours, do hiking every weekend with increasing weights on your pack, manage some time for cycling for a couple of hours for 2 or 3 times a week. However, at the high altitude, there might be little symptoms of altitude illness like mild headache, fatigue, etc. but take it as normal and just drink enough water (4 – 5 liters) every day. On this trek, you need to be able to hike 4 – 8 hours over hilly terrain up to 5,500m of altitude with a daypack.

How Crucial is Trekking and Hiking Experience?

If you have any previous experiences of similar grade trek would be helpful, but if you don’t have is also not a really important matter of issue. This trek will introduce you to high altitude trekking in the Himalayas and also about the local cultures, traditions, and local people.
Even if you are around the age of 65 years, you can be a candidate for this trek.
